… notes and thoughts …

more representations …

February 26th, 2008 ethereal

i’d rather be this busty graphic designer with the open shirt. “the sexy librarian” look ported over to GD. in either case, i am finding these odd little characters very interesting. someone picked these likenesses and said, this is what the career looks like.

benetton ads collected

February 24th, 2008 ethereal

i have searched for benetton ads before for lectures, but just stumbled across this press area on their site that has a good deal of them collected and available for download. its tough to get through a design history class or social marketing project without mention of them (and why not, they were significant for their time for sure). so here’s a link for your archives:

representation

February 23rd, 2008 ethereal

when designing, i often agonize and ponder at great length what the appropriate visual representation of the human form is. then i find something like this …

and it makes me relax a bit. so THATS what a graphix designer looks like.

more circles and dots

February 23rd, 2008 ethereal

here is what i think is my final circle/dot/spot drawing that i will now attempt to animate to show the growth of a small section of a network and then reveal its place within the larger network.

(that sounds like the intro to a trapeze trick, maybe it is …)

tastebook … co-creation template for cooking

February 22nd, 2008 ethereal

tastebook

here is another option for the creatively challenged.
or maybe the time challenged but creatively enabled.
or maybe it is just another point on the continuum from co-creation leeway to designer control framework.

epicurious has terrific recipes. its a time-tested online community that has proved a reliable resource for me and many of my friends for years. i used to print out recipes and keep them in a binder, now i just read them off my laptop which i bring into the kitchen or the dining room (and run back and forth between).

i think the thing that gets me is the phrase “professionally designed”. does this imply that there is a person working WITH you to design the book? or is it clear that a PROFESSIONAL designer did the template and now you get to pour in the content. or, does it imply that you can dabble in professional design?

anyway. thought i would pass this along.

dots and blips

February 19th, 2008 ethereal

i am reading a bit of bertin for the first time. its interesting, and making me reconsider the quality of every line, connector and dot when trying to convey information. for many classmates and peers this may be a statement after which the utterance “duh” is likely to follow. however, in this case it becomes the crossover into DOING instead of reading and thinking and assuming that i get it for practice in addition to concept. there is of course the possibility of over thinking, which i may be guilty of as well.

in any case, here are some sketches out of context for a small project i am doing that will attempt to show an interconnected network of support that is facilitated but not dependent on one member. there are varying degrees of membership.

Map shows toll on world’s oceans

February 14th, 2008 ethereal

I was intrigued by this article.
Map shows toll on world’s oceans

We all know that color connotes. Well, this is another example of color providing information for an article written for an audience that associates specific colors with meaning. Note the globe is yellow and orange. Perhaps there is a connection to code yellow in terrorist alert, yellow stoplights, orange construction barrels and so on … of course there is! And one glance shows the info they need to convey: peril and warning.

mapping fight club

February 3rd, 2008 ethereal

i stumbled across this interesting visualization of the action in “fight club”. i am not convinced that the visualization communicates much beyond the mind of the creator, but maybe i am not looking closely enough … regardless, i think the idea and the technique is really intriguing. what an interesting storyboard.
