opening doors to efficiency

August 30th, 2007 ethereal

critical thinking in everyday situations can manifest itself in unexpected ways. this summer i met sean lerner on a toronto geographic society wander and he showed me this little guidebook that he made to increase the efficiency of riding the TTC by anticipating which door opened at which stop. this tiny tool made a world of sense to me. this summer, whenever i rode the subway with my bike, i was concerned about blocking the doors. bikes are already scorned at on the train, and not knowing where to position the bike on a crowded train so that it was not in the way as the side that the doors opened on the cars changed from stop to stop was an added hassle. when i met sean, i thought … brillian idea! so, i wanted to share it:

it even includes nice instructions for folding and binding so that you can keep it in your wallet.

earworm

August 30th, 2007 ethereal

what a gross word: earworm.

it appears that this is “official” name for a tune, jingle or song that gets stuck in your head and you can’t get it out. the goal of song and jingle writers then would be to reach earworm status with their creations. it sounds a bit like a sniglet to me, but hey, thats how words in culture start.

Icograda Design Week: Culture in Cuba

August 29th, 2007 ethereal

Not to mention it was would amazing to visit Cuba, the topics for programming on this schedule match many of my interests in design research:

However, would it be a love fest? A conference version of It’s A Small World? Or, would it provoke dialogue with meaningful possibilities that examined the dangerous, the risky and the uncertain.

bone cuff bracelet

for those who were curious about the bracelet i chose as one of my favorite design artifacts, here is a pic. its a beautiful piece of decorative armor, blending organic shape and metal into the body. i did not realize that they made one for each wrist, but it appears they do. designed in 1974, its a classic.

i love interesting bbc headlines. and when all the real estate you get are a few words in an rss feed, its got to be good to get clicks.

interesting navigation: post tool

August 25th, 2007 ethereal

post tool

a san fran based design and technology firm experiments with the thumbnail sketch as a navigation method. intuitive? i am not sure. however, why do web sites need to be completely intuitive when the purpose of the site is to showcase design thinking that is outside the realm of predictable comfort? this navigation appeals to me for the following reasons:

i had to figure it out
as a person who has sketched many thumbnails, i knew where to start
once i figured it out, there were visual surprises in the margins
it made me feel that i could configure the screen according to my preferences

it did nit function well to actually read the text. the small, dense copy was uninviting and difficult to stay with. i lost patience, in spite of wanting to know more about the company and their ideology.
