i spent a large portion of today drawing. the “problem” to solve or the framework i was drawing within was the the theme sickness & health. this is the next show at gioia & ianna’s gallery, tangent. i don’t think i came up with anything that will ever make it to the gallery. after all, how interesting is 76 i.v. bags drawn in black ink on grey cardboard? i knew going into it that i would most likely not make something that would end up being public worthy, but it was important that i DO SOMETHING. all of my obsessive energy has been going into the wrong things these past few months. i need to reroute this to something better, healthier. so even though my sickness & health drawing will not be featured on a gallery wall, it was more cathartic than obsessing over a finished product would be.

video idea:
fuzzy fragments of late summer neighborhood life
song: life’s fading light by the sight below
script read and cut into sentences, not sequntial
script:
Listen to this
Doesn’t it just break your heart?
It reminds me of how the days pass
The 24 hour cycle is so cruel
I see markers pass with no way to slow down or speed up
Circadian rhythms mismatch with my ethos, ego, centric point of view
I am at the center
Its the only circle I have ever known
We spend our whole lives searching for ourselves, its ironic
I AM RIGHT HERE
Doesn’t this just break your heart?
Maybe I was already this way before I heard this song
I am here on borrowed time, aren’t I
I love you, I never say it anymore
Listen to me
I am about to break your heart
You are already gone
I had to break my own to leave
I am already gone

found this project while looking for hummer clip art. yes, hummer clip art.
“This life-sized gum-ball covered HumVee comments on pop culture and
reminds us of soldiers handing candy to children in far-flung countries
at war with us.”
artist: heidi hesse
site
i was looking for said clip art because i was trying to visualize what 8113 M kg of Co2 looks like and thought i could convert that to the carbon output of a fleet of hummer h3s. so i wanted to share this interesting project with you.
to note, when i searched for “hummer” on clipart.com, the query returned only the vector image of a lobster. how odd. or is it some twisted metaphor? just not sure.

i was enchanted by this folded paper type that i found today. i was looking for images for my riveting lecture on commercial folding, scoring and perforation. woo hoo! i decided i would pair the stimulating content with images in the background that were handmade. you know, for contrast. (insert sarcasm here) but, technical failure prevented the enhancement of my lecture in a timely fashion so my students got text on a screen, old school. i have this nice collection of folded paper images though. and the google search revealed a world of folded paper beyond cranes and origami (not that it isn’t lovely). the paper type and architectural models were the ones closest to the pulp of my paper soul.

I had a piece in a “Back to School” themed show this weekend at Tangent in Sacramento. Here is a link to what the show is about:
www.tangent-gallery.com
I dissected my diaries from 1989–1992, months Sept.–Oct. and did some “statistical analysis” of them to show various trends like “classes mentioned” 1988-89 vs “crushes on boys”, and how do they compare. Journal entries were analyzed for language and color coded into the following categories:
classes mentioned
moments of dispair
sporting events/practices
crushes on boys
sporting failures
odd school activities
god related entries
instances of the heart icon
The results were … thought provoking and definitely humorous. The results were compiled and most charted to show trends over time. For example, after transitioning from 8th to 9th grade, crushes spiked where classes were barely mentioned. Interesting indeed.
Here is a rather poor photo of the piece. I will replace it with a better one when I get back to shoot it. The copied journal entries are sewn together and extend about 6 ft to the right.

An excerpt from the Report, Category of Analysis: Odd School Activities
“SLAVE DAY: MAY 1988:
Although not in the study period, this fascinating activity proved noteworthy. Upon further research it appears that selected classmates are purchased as “slaves” for the day by fellow students, dressed up and required to perform tasks. The journalist mentions being a spectacle is possibly more appealing than being overlooked. It appears to have been a humiliating experience, not surprisingly. Further study would be needed to determine whether this honors or condemns the historic practice of “slavery.”
